This article presents information about the novel "The Transients," by Mark Van Doren. There are four main characters, two mortals and two immortal beings from another world, transiently clothed with humanity. There are three episodes, the love of each mortal for an immortal, the love of the two immortals for each other. Although the episodes interlock, each has a special equality and completeness. The language and the setting are simple. The other-worldliness is all in the feelings and behind the feelings of the beings involved. There is homeliness in the speech and air of the first episode.
