The article focuses on several books. "The Quick and the Dead," by Claire Spencer. Spencer works very hard to describe the emotions of her characters, but she never once succeeds in making those characters interesting or their emotions contagious; "Babylon on Hudson." The novel is an acceptance of large social problems as a legitimate field for fiction, a few shrewd characterizations, an unpretentious style sustained at a level somewhat above the average; "Soft Answers," by Richard Aldington; "Letter From an Unknown Woman," by Stefan Zweig; "Pigeon Irish," by Francis Stuart. This novel is laid in the Ireland of the future, at a time when war was destroying the rest of the world.
