This article briefly discusses the book "The American Language," 4th ed., by H.L. Mencken and Alfred A. Knopf. Abundance and variety of material, clearly organized and displayed with unflagging zest, is the chief characteristic of the book. It is not, of course, a complete or original treatise on any aspect of the subject, but as a general handbook it occupies the field and will probably continue to do so. The verbal index lists upward of 10,000 words and phrases, to which the subject index adds almost 3,000 entries. The footnotes, a mode of conscientious documentation, follow the text step by step.
