The article focuses on the book "The Bulpington of Blup," by H.G. Wells. Theodore Bulpington was the son of a literary dilettante who came near to flourishing during the nineties. Theodore himself grew up in a somewhat preciously "advanced" atmosphere, and was accustomed from childhood to retire from reality into a dream world where he was not his own undistinguished self but a legendary figure known as "The Bulpington of Blup." According to the author, Wells has changed in one subtle way, but in one only. Gradually, quite imperceptibly, he has become less and less the prophet of his chosen generation and more and more its mere historian.
