Austria has become a pale and shrunken state caught in the nutcracker of Fascist Italy and Hitlerite Germany, which is the next to succumb to the enormous pressure of reaction in Central Europe. The parliament is dead, the press is gagged, and the ruling is done by decree already. And this is only the beginning, for Austria, always unlucky, faces the possibility not merely of one Putsch but of two. Menacing Doilfuss, who is himself on the right, are two camps even farther to the right. If the Heirnwehr, his semi-allies, do not gobble him, the Nazis will.
