This article reports on a large number of employees suffering from silicosis at Caterpillar Tractor Co. located in Peoria, Illinois. Holding basic patents, Caterpillar Tractor Co. is the largest manufacturer of track-type tractors in the world. Under the laws of the state of Illinois the workers knew that the company was in the safe side. The silica dust in the Caterpillar foundry was so thick that the men operating hand trucks collided in the main gangway. There were no masks at all, except for the two men operating the pressure hoses in the sandblast and no partitions separating the blasting and cleaning rooms from the rest of the foundry.
