This article focuses on the book "The Culture of Cities," by Lewis Mumford. Mumford's book is like a magnificent city in itself. It has the rich imagery, the active commerce in ideas, the evidence, put into visual forms, of long spans of history. The book has something that corresponds to the very vitality of the city, as if the author had absorbed a multitude. The chief value lies, however, not in the drama, vivid as this is, but in the usefulness of the volume as an instrument meant to help along an active piece of work.
