In the midst of the greatest era of prosperity the U.S. has ever known since the last one, the city of Chicago, Illinois is going to brake. It cannot meet its obligations. Day after tomorrow is payday for its 13,000 teachers, but there will be no pay. Two months ago the Civic Federation stated that "financial chaos" was imminent unless tax collections improved. One month ago Mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly said that the city would not be able to meet its pay roll "by summer" unless tax collections improved. Day before yesterday was the deadline for the second installment of the 1935 real-estate taxes.
