Crime and the Courts in Chicago

The article discusses crimes and courts in Chicago, Illinois. Chicago is the greatest railroad center in the U.S. and therefore affords unrivaled opportunities for a quick getaway to the evildoer. The police force of the city is entirely inadequate to cover the vast network of railway lines, of entrances and exits to the city. There is also the fact that Chicago is more generously endowed with adjacent penitentiaries than any other town in the U.S. Now a convict upon being liberated from prison is given a small sum of money, so that he may not be immediately thrown upon his own resources. The amount varies. The small sum of money granted to the convict on his release is the equivalent in many cases of the railway fare from the prison to Chicago.
