Hardly one have emerged from a wave of humanist criticism, which rated a work of fiction low or high in direct ratio to the amount of will to refrain exhibited by its hero, than one hit by a wave of Communist criticism, which hoots or hails a work of art in proportion as it seems to oppose, ignore, or support the opinion of a German economist who died in 1883. The article also throws light on Michael Gold's attack, on the work of Thornton Wilder. Gold finds Wilder guilty of two mortal sins: failure to choose his characters from the proletariat.
