The article focuses on the book entitled "Literary Criticism in America," written by G. E. De Mille. The author remarks that the book is very competent as far as it goes, but as it stands now, it is a tantalizing piece of work that leaves the reader neither here nor there. In author's opinion one thing that perhaps stopped De Mille from writing a comprehensive study in a difficult field is the fact that he has little patience with seriousness. In trying to show William Dean Howells's inadequacies as a critic De Mille fails to develop what is most important about Howells in this department: his influence on the development of American taste.
