It happened during the eighties of the century before last. Berlin was still an amiable village, and a tired old king, his bones aching from the interminable hours spent in the saddle, was trying to rule his newly acquired domains, with the help of an underpaid army and an empty treasury. The situation was desperate. It is futile to speculate upon the future of the U.S. if New Jersey Senator Dwight Whitney Morrow had been able to devote another dozen years to the pursuit of common sense mixed with humor and humor mixed with common sense.
