It is amusing to hear many Republicans express great anxiety as to the kind of Cabinet which Governor Franklin Roosevelt, if elected, may appoint. They express alarm lest he invite politician William Randolph Hearst to a seat at the Cabinet table. They are afraid, or pretend to be afraid, that the mayor of Jersey City will have the naming of one member and that politician William G. McAdoo, defeated in the California election, will be asked to be Secretary of State. They dwell movingly on the dearth of good material in the Democratic Party and if partisan enough, touch upon the danger to the Republic of having the Speaker sit with the Cabinet. As for the Socialists, it is a common sneer that if politician Norman Thomas were elected, there would not be enough first-rank Socialists to fill half the Cabinet seats.
