The article focuses on Ogden Mills' speeches, with reference to his speeches on the tariff problem. Mills felt compelled to defend himself for making it. Referring to the lost foreign markets and the necessity of restoring purchasing power at home and also of promoting "a greater prosperity and a higher standard of living the world over," Mills correctly declared that "we will have to abandon the present policy of isolation and intense nationalism and to some extent modify recent tariff practices." Mills was also excellent in protesting against the new doctrine of isolation, "autarchy," as it is called.
