The Chilean liberals, under President Pedro Aguirre Cerda, will try to continue their bloodless revolution in the face of bitter and perhaps violent opposition from the near-fascists on the right, who have threatened to boycott the coming election, and from the Communists on the left. The task of keeping a balance between hostile forces while pushing ahead with social reform is always difficult, and especially so when a country has other and equally pressing problems to solve. Aguirre's more conservative supporters have constantly urged him to go slowly with his reform program and to break away from the extreme left.
