The article presents information on several major developments from across the world. Reports of extensive demands against Indo-China suggest that the long-awaited Japanese Blitzkrieg against the Western powers may be near. The last few weeks have been momentous for Japan. Stung by the failure of its latest attempt at appeasement, the British government has struck back at Japan by arresting nine prominent Japanese, also on charges of espionage. On June 11, 1940 the U.S. Congress passed a law authorizing the President to levy an embargo on the export of military equipment and "machinery, tools, or material or supplies necessary for the manufacturing, servicing, or operation thereof." This power was primarily intended for use against Japan, and was broad enough to cover planes, oil, steel, machine tools, chemicals, and all other necessities of war.
