The article presents information that was published in the journal "The Nation," 50 years ago. The U.S. government receipts for the fiscal year, ending June 30, 1893, were about $2,000,000 in excess, of expenditures. For the present fiscal year it is expected that they will be $28,000,000 less than the expenditures. On December 21, 1893 it was reported that books titled "Darwiniana" by T.H. Huxley and "Drama," by Henry Irving were selected as books of the week by the journal. It also reports that the practice on the part of the athletic element in colleges, of seeking athletes out and bribing them by offers of a free education to come to one college rather than another, has become unhappily common.
