The article discusses books and authors. Why do historians write histories-to trace the causes of contemporary upheavals back to their sources in previous generations, or merely to tell the story of the past? If the first answer is correct, then author A. L. Burt's latest book on Canada, "A Short History of Canada for Americans," is a notable failure, but if the second answer is correct it is a notable success. Burt is a native Canadian who is now professor of history at the University of Minnesota. He tells the story of Canada's origin and growth in lucid and read- able prose.
