The article focuses on the book "The Negro Caravan: Writings by American Negroes," by Sterling A. Brown. Back in the 1920s books about African Americans and by them were welcomed with an uncritical enthusiasm that was as harmful to the writers as it was essentially false because it was based on the assumption, which many of the books exploited, that the African American life was different from white life. The old stereotyped notions of African American life and character persisted. What the present collection should establish once and for all is the identity of writing by African Americans, that is from beginning to end part and parcel of American literature in derivation and tendency, in form, content, and intention.
