Automobile Dealers Can't Win

The article discusses about campaigns of the General Motors Corporation to advertise the new G.M. price tags. These tags are supposed to give the consumer a break; all charges over the factory price are itemized and the dealer cannot pack the bill. At a meeting of manufacturers' executives a few years ago, M.R. Grant of General Motors said he deliberately put more handling charge. The "handling charges" were paid by the public; the manufacturer was able to maintain his advertised FOB factory price. In most industries when retailers cannot earn a profit by selling at the price established by the manufacturer, either the retail price is increased or the wholesale cost is lowered.
