In this article, the author critically examines the book "Poetry and the Modern World," by David Daiches. Daiches has written one of the few tough-minded studies of twentieth-century English poetry. Others have turned it over more sensitively on their tongues, or approached it with more zest and spirit. Scarcely anyone, in fact, has dealt with it more soberly than Daiches, but then, scarcely anyone has tried harder to explain its impulses, plumb its morality, and chart its direction. His book, as a result, is not so much criticism as analysis, and at times not so much analysis as exposition.
