The article discusses the book "John D. Rockefeller: The Heroic Age of American Enterprise," by Allan Nevins, which is published in two volumes. The book is designed to rank as the authoritative biography of the founder of the Standard Oil Co. It constitutes an ambitious attempt to present a view on Rockefeller different from that of other biographers. According to the author, in order to refute an aspersion cast upon Rockefeller's father by one of his previous biographer, it was not necessary for Nevins to give a prolix account of his parentage and early life. This mass of items, occupying much of the first volume, may be gratifying to Rockefeller's descendants, but it is of no vital interest to posterity.
