For the most part Washington is convinced that presidential candidate Wendell Willkie will get his wish. At the conclusion of the Philadelphia contest, the Republican nominee expressed a desire to take on U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt. A surprising number of Roosevelt partisans, both in and outside official life, think the President will not accept the nomination, which is sure to be offered him. Third-termers, on the other hand believe the President has waited so long to declare his intentions that the situation is now completely beyond his control. They think he will be nominated on the first ballot and drafted even in the face of a last-minute message announcing his retirement. The nomination of Willkie by the Republicans is one.
