The article presents information on the book "Russia in the World Arms Trade," edited by Andrew J. Pierre and Dmitri Trenin. Because of the increasing importance attached to Russian arms exports, the Moscow center of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace established the Russian-American Working Group on Conventional Arms Proliferation. The result of its efforts, first published in Russian in 1996 and translated into English in 1997, is of uneven quality. Not one of the book's seven chapters pays serious attention to the arms export activities of Russia's smugglers and organized crime. With the exception of Andrew Pierre, all were written by Russian officials and specialists.
