In 1935, when Thomas Garrigue Masaryk, President of Czechoslovakia resigned and Eduard Benes was elected to his post, Benes knew that he could not avoid being drawn into the approaching conflict, for it was certain to be precipitated by some move of Germany's. Benes decided therefore to give first place to building up the army, and threw himself with energy into this work. The second task undertaken by Benes was to strengthen and rescue what could still be saved of the system of alliances. Benes made official visits to Romania, Yugoslavia, and France. In Romania, at the meeting of the Little Entente countries on June 6-7, 1936, Benes found the first open break in the Little Entente.
