The Spanish Socialist Party held its first full conference in Paris, France in May 1948. The first point on the agenda of the conference was internal politics. The delegates voted unanimously to reject any compromise on the issue of the republic. The conference rejected both the Prieto plan and the Communist proposal for a kind of national front including the monarchists. At the same time the delegates went on record against a policy of anti-communism. The discussion on foreign policy proved most interesting. After a lively debate the delegates finally voted to oppose Spanish participation on either side in the battle of the blocs.
