Illinois elects twenty-six members of the U.S. House of Representatives on November 5, 1946. Only the delegations from New York and Pennsylvania exceed that number. So Illinois, politically apathetic, lacking even the drama of a senatorial or gubernatorial contest, may be a determining factor in the political make-up of the next U.S. Congress. Currently fifteen Republicans and eleven Democrats represent the state, but it has an unusually large number of so-called marginal districts. Moreover, the state has not been redistricted since 1901. The Congressional result, therefore, will not necessarily reflect the political sentiments of the people of Illinois.
