The article discusses books and authors. Author Max Lerner has performed a service for American literature in "The Mind and Faith of Justice Holmes." He has brought together in one volume all that is most characteristic of the Justice: occasional addresses and essays, selections from "The Common Law," a sheaf of his letters, as well as his principal opinions and dissents on the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts and the Supreme Court of the United States. Lerner has provided a biographical sketch and a running commentary done with good taste and shrewd insight. There emerges the portrait of a supremely civilized man, a judge, thinker, and artist of first rank.
