This article focuses on the book "A Sand County Almanac and Sketches Here and There," by Aldo Leopold. Leopold had spent his life working in forestry and wildlife management. The little essays which compose this book were originally published in such obscure places as "Journal of Forestry," and "Wisconsin Agriculturist and Farmer." Progress, he says, seems to be the exchange of one good for another, education the learning of some things at the cost of forgetting others. Conservation is an attempt to minimize the effects of reckless exploitation, but it can only minimize.
