This article focuses on Gifford Phillips, a political activist in the U.S. Phillips was born in Washington D.C. Attending private schools in Colorado Springs, Phillips was exposed to the densely conservative influences. In 1944 he resolved to devote his energies and his fortune to the high purpose of liberalizing the Republican Party of Colorado, which was his own party as well as that of his family and his class. In September 1948, Phillips made an important decision. He switched his registration from the Republican to the Democratic Party, came out for U.S. President Harry S. Truman, and made a substantial investment in the party of his adoption.
