The article focuses on party politics in the U.S. A definitive realignment is still nowhere in sight, but developments point more and more to that eventual division between liberal and conservative which has always been the hope of political theorists and the dread of vote-catching politicians. A striking indication is the emergence of James F. Byrnes as spokesman for the anti-statists. Another is the increasing talk of a national extra-party group to serve the right much as Americans for Democratic Action now serves the left.
