The article focuses on the book "Killers of the Dream," by Lillian Smith. In the book Smith points out that two conflicting streams of thought have characterized the culture of the South. One embraces the idea of the dignity of the human personality, belief in the rights of man and in the nobility of the human spirit. This creed finds political expression in the institution of democracy and spiritual expression in the Christian religion. This is the dream. The other tradition is that of racism. The subordination of people because of their color is part of its cultural heritage.
