Surgery in the C. I. O

The article focuses on the eleventh convention of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO). If any one oratorical line can be said to have sounded the keynote of the eleventh annual convention of CIO, it was speaker Walter Reuther's comment: "we have come here to cut out the cancer and save the body of CIO." The estimate of the situation may have been extreme, but except for the Communists, who, playing the role of the cancer, had little to say, nearly everyone agreed that the surgery was inevitable. At the same time nobody took the operation lightly, many had misgivings about the way it was performed and some thought it could have been avoided if the growth had not been carelessly fostered in its early stages.
