It is always pleasant to see a civilian official tell off an important military chief; and the Anglo-Saxon tradition of shooting one admiral to encourage others is fairly ancient. But in the row, which has just cost Admiral Louis B. Denfeld his job as Chief of Naval Operations, it would be smart of everybody to stop acting like innocent bystanders and pay a little attention to what is going on. The first fact that should be discovered is that the U.S. is now a fully militarized nation. Measured by the budget, the U.S. Department of National Defense is by far the most important part of the government.
