The article present in formation on several plays. For the revival of any play from the recent past there is a standard review which consists of saying, that the piece is "dated," that it moves too slowly; and that the performance is not as good as the original one. Most of my colleagues trotted out this ready-made discourse for "They Knew What They Wanted." As to the performance, it is true that Pauline Lord, Richard Bennett, and Glenn Anders constituted in 1924 an almost perfect team. But it is equally true that Paula Stone, Paul Mimi, and Edward Andrercvs are fully good enough to bring out the principal values in a play which is still compassionate and moving enough to be one of the two or three things most worth seeing on Broadway.
