The article discusses the new stage of Soviet music. The Composers' Union had met in Moscow, Soviet Union from December 21 to 29, 1948. About one hundred new compositions were performed. A great deal of material about the meeting is published in Soviet papers and periodicals, but it is all extremely one-sided. Only speeches that closely followed the party line were reported at length; others were dismissed in a couple of sentences. The leaders of the Composers Union remarked that while these composers were refraining from the cruder manifestations of formalism, such as atonalism and cacophony, they were not yet organically united with the ideals of Communist civilization.
