The article focuses on Peiping, a former transliteration of Beijing. The first few weeks of Communist control in the presumed future capital of the most populous Communist-led nation in the world have been curiously undramatic. This may be largely because Peiping was not seized by storm either from within or without but surrendered by agreement on January 22, 1949. Many Peiping residents were less enthusiastic. The long-suffering Chinese are a skeptical and pragmatic people who judge governments not by their names or programs but by whether they allow people to prosper.
