The article focuses on cotton plantation in California. California is crowding South Carolina for fifth place among the cotton-producing states. California cotton has been given an enormous press not only in the state but also in the whole of U.S. It has been treated as another fabulous California success story, another "gold strike." But as one penetrates the fog of ballyhoo, one sees that increased cotton production is aggravating the tensions in California's agricultural economy and has already created serious social and economic problems.
