Since the death of founder of the Scripps-Howard newspapers, journalist E. W. Scripps, the liberal, crusading organization Scripps created has degenerated to a pale and weak conservatism. But there is one man who is fighting uncompromisingly for the ideals Scripps advocated during his flamboyant life. This man is a fragile, seventy-three-year-old little Clevelander who, when bends his gaze upon a listener, however, and speaks his mind, his quality becomes clear. He is, of course, journalist Jack Raper of the Cleveland Press. Though he has never become nationally known, the men with whom he works swear by him and insist, with a catch in their throats, that he is the answer to a newspaperman's prayer and that if there is a last journalist it is he.
