American trade unions have met the problem of organizing Negroes in a variety of ways. A desire to monopolize the market for their members' skill, together with race prejudice, has induced some craft unions to adopt the color bar. Fifteen such organizations still exclude Negroes by explicit provision in their constitutions or rituals. Some craft unions have attempted to insure Negroes equality both in the union and on the job. The large number of Negroes in the trowel trades undoubtedly was an important factor in inducing these organizations to adopt such a policy.
