Ever since Texas Democrats got back the right to vote in 1871, the Democratic nominees for state and Congressional offices have had little trouble in winning the election. Few have even bothered to campaign, once they have won the Democratic primary in the summer. But this year Texas Democrats will have to work to elect their candidates for U.S. Presidency and Vice-Presidency, and the Democratic nominee for the United States Senate seat now held by W. Lee O'Daniel will have to put up a real fight to beat his Republican rival. The transformation of Texas into a two-party state may be in the offing.
