This article focuses on the book "Marvelous Journey. A Survey of Four Centuries of Brazilian Writing," by Samuel Putnam. The author says that for most of his adult life Samuel Putnam has been writing about literature written in other tongues than English. When in he 1930's he turned his major attention from French, Italian, and Spanish to Portuguese, and particularly to that variant of Portuguese which is used in Brazil, he seemed to many of his friends to be working up a side alley of dubious importance.
