This article focuses on victory of Herman Talmadge, a political leader, in Georgia as Governor. The author says that, the insistence of the Talmadge forces that the question of civil rights was the sole issue of the campaign was not alone responsible for the defeat of Acting Governor. Herman Talmadge fell heir to the whole Talmadge tradition of dramatic identification with the rural white voters of Georgia. According to the author, contributing to his victory was the character of the opposition. The author comments that it remains true that the campaign turned on the race issue. The turbid tide of bitterness and anger and hatred ran full, and the voters impatiently swept aside acting governor protestations of his opposition to civil-rights legislation and his devotion to a segregated society.
