The article presents information on two books related to politics. "The Disruption of American Democracy," by Roy Franklin Nichols and "Lincoln and the War Governors," by William B. Hesseltine. The state of major political parties has always been an index of crises in American history. These two scholarly monographs are reminders that the condition of the parties has more than symptomatic significance, that far from being cash registers which merely ring up the accounts of economic interests, the parties are independent social forces of capital importance.
