On the morning of May 30, 1948, the Portland Housing Authority, Portland, Oregon distributed a circular in Vanport. It stated that he dikes at the Columbia River protecting the city are safe and in case if emergency the citizens will be given warning to evacuate. Eight hours later a wall of water toppled on to Vanport. The people had warning-five or six minutes. Most of them had to flee for their lives, leaving behind every personal possession. The Army Engineers contend they did not know the condition of the embankment because it was constructed long ago, in 1907. Vanport is gone. Where once stood America's largest wartime housing project, a mass of debris now tosses on a silly lake.
