The article focuses on the books "Fallen Sun: A Report on Japan," by Noel F. Busch. There have been many books about Japan in the past few years and some of them have attempted to gather together the evidence of the impact of defeat and the American occupation. The author shows a sense of the unprecedented drama of trying to democratize an autocratic system through the instrument of a conquering army. Busch, a Life reporter in Japan in 1946, presents three phases of the drama — the occupation, the character and attitude of the Japanese people and the relation of Soviet Union and communism to the future of Japan.
