Shall We Draft Women?

In the United States, in sharp contrast to the situation in England, Russia, and China, the war has so far been predominantly a man's war. An enormous amount of feminine energy has gone into rolling bandages for the Red Cross, knitting sweaters, air-raid-precaution work, first-aid courses, and motor-corps-auxiliary activities. But all this, though of undoubted value, is on the periphery of the war effort. In coming months, if the war is to be won, American women will have to contribute a very large part of the additional effort demanded by total war.
