The article focuses on the book "The Rights of Man and Natural Law" by the author Jacques Maritain is concerned here with two related but sometimes conflicting matters: the natural basis of human society and the divine basis of human rights. A good Aristotelian, the nature of a thing is defined for him by its function, and Maritain sees society as both an expression and an imperfect fulfillment of human needs. Maritains book is so generous, and even sagacious, in its social idealism that one regrets both his addiction to metaphysics and the fact that his ultimate commitments are other than naturalistic.
