The article discusses the aftermath of German bombings. Details are still lacking about conditions in the bombed regions in Germany. An announcement carried by one of the leading papers on May 18, 1943 said that the city water was no longer drinkable, that it must be boiled before it was used. No explanation was given. One can only assume that the aerating and filter plants of the Essen water system, which serves a region containing at least 750,000 inhabitants, have been destroyed. Of Essen's 200 school buildings 179 have either been destroyed, or are being used as emergency dwellings by persons bombed out of their homes, or are occupied by bombed-out offices.
