"Silent, mournful, abandoned, broken," Eduard Benes, the Czecho-Slovak President, went into exile after the Munich decision. Now he is gloriously ascendant. As before Munich, he is the Czecho-Slovak President. Shining in adversity, a statesman in 1943 as he was in the thirties and the twenties, Benes today walks in the van of the wise sculptors of the world to be. As always for him, the goal is certain, and as always the road is hard. Many of the pitfalls that have made his path hazardous since Munich were dug by the United States. Benes's foreign policy is hinged on Russia. The United States dilly-dallies about the place of Russia in America's post-war foreign policy.
